With the return of Parliament, we are demanding that committees get up and running as soon as possible. Unfortunately, this request was denied by the Liberals.
This is completely unacceptable.
When Justin Trudeau prorogued Parliament he shut down the important work of several committees.
Much of the work of Members of Parliament is done at committees. It is necessary to have a fully functioning Parliament that can hold the government to account.
The Liberals could delay the restart of the important work of committees until November. This is another attempt to avoid accountability.
There are several delay tactics the Liberals could employ to avoid accountability, including:
- Delaying the work of the Procedure and House Affairs Committee in nominating the membership of other committees
- Playing games at organizational meetings of Committees where chairs are elected, and agendas set
- Not allowing committees to meet virtually or in a hybrid manner
We need a fully functioning Parliament that includes committees to hold Justin Trudeau to account while respecting public health guidelines.
The Health Committee could oversee the Liberals’ ongoing response to COVID-19.
The Finance committee might prepare recommendations for our economic recovery. Their work will support the livelihoods of Canadians in every region of the country.
The Human Resources committee can look at the legislation that transitions Canadians from CERB to EI.
The Ethics committee should resume its inquiry into the WE scandal where Justin Trudeau can be held accountable for his ethical failings.
It's time to get Parliament up and running again and time is of the essence.
