The Government Must Stop Targeting Law-Abiding Firearm Owners

Westman law abiding firearm owners are not the problem.

Yet, the Liberal government continues to push legislation that only impacts our sports shooters and law-abiding firearm owners, rather than the criminals breaking the law.

I have met and spoken with countless Westman firearm owners over the past couple of years.

They are good, honest, and decent people who took the necessary training and safety courses to get their firearms licence.

They had to submit to a criminal background check.

They had to submit a reference check.

And every single day, their names are run through the Canadian Police Information Centre.

Many would be surprised to know this, but a lot of them are Veterans or still serving members of our Canadian Armed Forces.  Many are also retired or active members of various law enforcement agencies.

Now with Bill C-21, the Liberal’s new firearm legislation, they are once again targeting the wrong group of people and in the process, not allocating resources where it’s needed the most.

The reality is, most gun crimes are committed with illegally obtained firearms.

There is zero evidence to suggest that our sports shooting community is at the root of the problem.

Regardless of whether you like the fact there are law-abiding firearm owners who are into sports shooting, there is no proof, indication or facts that point to them being the source of firearms being used in a crime.

Taking property away from law-abiding citizens does nothing to stop dangerous criminals and gangs who obtain their guns illegally.

It is shameful that the Liberals voted against and defeated Bill C-238, a Conservative bill that would have imposed tougher sentences for criminals smuggling or who are found in possession of illegal firearms.

The Trudeau Liberals’ decision to vote against this bill shows they are not serious about stopping dangerous criminals from getting their hands on illegal guns.

Instead of targeting law-abiding Canadians and firearm retailers, the government should be investing in police anti-gang and gun units, and the CBSA, to provide law enforcement with the resources they need to stop illegal smuggling operations and get dangerous criminals and gangs off our streets.
