Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris issued the following statement on the passing of Jim Flaherty:
"It is with tremendous sadness that I make the following statement upon hearing of Jim Flaherty's passing earlier this afternoon. My condolences and prayers go out to Christine & the whole Elliott-Flaherty family at this difficult time.
"I have not been in Ottawa long, but Jim was one of the first people I met after arriving on Parliament Hill. He was kind and welcoming.
"He was a true leader who engaged with all. Some reports today have described him as a "happy warrior". I agree and believe that all parliamentarians can learn from Jim's approach to his job.
"Constituents in Brandon-Souris will recall I was sworn into the House of Commons shortly before his last budget day. One thing I noticed in the weeks leading up to that day was the breadth and depth of Jim's consultations with fellow parliamentarians and other stakeholders.
"Jim cared deeply about our country and his leadership steered our country through the global economic recession. Under his guidance, Canada's economy became the envy of the G-7.
"A book of condolences will be available at my constituency office in Brandon to give constituents an opportunity to share their feelings and to thank Jim for his many years of service to our country. The book will be delivered to Christine and Jim's three sons."
