A Member of Parliament has put forward a Private Members Bill to make November 11th a legal holiday, however, just for approximately 820,000 federally regulated employees (banks, telecommunications, railways, radio and television broadcasting, federal Crown Corporations).
This Bill modifies the Holidays Act to make Remembrance Day a legal holiday, which impacts federally regulated employees, however, does not impose on provinces to adopt it as a paid statutory holiday.
The Bill states that if November 11th should happen to fall on a weekend, then the Monday following becomes a holiday.
Lastly, the Bill enshrines the practice of lowering the Canadian flag on the Peace Tower to half-mast on November 11th.
Should Remembrance Day be made a legal holiday?
