Melita, MB - Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris highlighted federal funding towards the construction of a higher and extended permanent dike to adequately protect the Town of Melita and the RM of Arthur against future flooding. The funds are provided through the Building Canada Plan which is the largest and longest infrastructure program in Canadian history.
MP Maguire said, "This funding will support much needed flood mitigation and builds on the existing dike system, which will go a long way to enhance the safety of our homes, businesses and roads. Our Government will continue to deliver on our commitment to support safe, modern infrastructure as we focus on creating jobs, promoting growth, and building strong, prosperous communities in Manitoba."
The project consists of upgrades to the existing dikes plus the construction of a new dike along Highway #3 linking the north and south dikes. The projected cost of the project is $4,510,000. The Government of Canada is contributing close to $2,029,500 which is matched by the Province of Manitoba. The remaining funding will be split between the Town of Melita, RM of Arthur and two other parties that share a portion of the dike. Tenders will go out on September 12th, 2014 and construction will commence following the bid selection.
"I will continue to work hard and get results for southwestern Manitoba. I will always stand up for the many unique challenges facing rural communities and be a strong voice for our region," concluded MP Maguire.
