I am encouraging Westman teachers to apply to participate in the Teachers Institute on Canadian Parliamentary Democracy conference from November 5th to 10th in Ottawa. This will be the 21st edition of the Teachers Institute and eighty-five educators will be selected to experience this professional development opportunity that offers insight into the workings of Parliament.
Participants will help create new ways to teach students about Parliament, Canadian democracy, governance and citizenship. They will also hear from experts in the political, procedural and educational fields.
It’s so important to teach students about the cornerstones of Canadian democracy and this program equips teachers with the tools and knowledge to do so.
Participants will have the chance to meet the Speakers of the House of Commons and Senate, along with the opportunity to watch Question Period, parliamentary debates and committee meetings.
Educators are eligible to apply if they currently work in the education sector, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and within subjects related to citizenship, civics or social studies.
This initiative enables teachers to bolster their skills in educating students about Canadian Democracy and Parliament within the halls of the institution itself.
The application deadline is April 15th, 2017.
