MP Larry Maguire to Support May's Private Members Bill on Lyme Disease Strategy

OTTAWA - Larry Maguire, MP for Brandon-Souris, announced today that he will support Elizabeth May's Private Members Bill C-442 on Lyme Disease, so that it can be advanced and studied at committee.

MP Maguire said, "I firmly believe the people of Brandon-Souris elected me to work with all Members of Parliament, regardless of the party they represent. I have recently met with families in Southwestern Manitoba who have dealt with Lyme Disease and they have asked me to support C-442."

Bill C-442 proposes that a conference including provincial and territorial ministers and stakeholders, including the medical community and patients' groups, be convened to develop a national strategy that includes:

  1. the establishment of a national medical surveillance program to use data collected by the Public Health Agency of Canada to properly track incidence rates and the associated economic costs of Lyme disease;

  2. the establishment of guidelines regarding the prevention, identification, treatment and management of Lyme disease, including a recommended national standard of care thatreflects current best practices for the treatment of Lyme disease; and

  3. the creation and distribution of standardized educational materials related to Lyme disease, for use by any public health care provider within Canada, designed to increase national awareness about the disease and enhance its prevention, identification, treatment and management.

"During the recent by-election, I was very clear that I will take the concerns of Brandon-Souris to Ottawa. I will continue to stand up for the residents of Southwestern Manitoba and work on their behalf," said MP Maguire.
